Hand of Friendship

This group was started in 1974 by two ladies who realised that there was a need for elderley people in Hagley to be able to meet and share a meal. So many of them were complaining of never seeing anyone to talk to from one week to the next.

Barbara Douglas and Jean English set up the group at the Free Church and it has continued to this day. Carol Milbanke and Mildred McOwen took over the group in 1996 when Barbara Douglas retired. At first only 24 members were allowed to be enroled but we now cook lunch on Thursdays for approximately 60 people which is our full capacity.

The criteria is to caterold or lonely people to enable them to make friends and share a meal.

Needless to say we are blessed with a team of very dedicated helpers who prepare and produce a two course hot meal and tea or coffee.

We also organise two or three outings a year by coach for a meal.
